Hi. I’m Yutaro, a software engineer at GAOGAO, a start-up studio based in Southeast Asia and Japan.

Software Engineering Meetups in Japan

  • Popular event platform is connpass.com
  • Most of them are in the Japanese language only

connpass (not compass) is a popular event platform among Japanese software engineers for getting information about tech conferences, meetups, etc.

There are plenty of events listed on the website, but most of them are in the Japanese language only, making it harder for those who prefer English information to reach out and English events to join in.

Of course, there are some English events, but not many.

Despite that situation, there are software engineers living in Japan who are willing to share their knowledge in English but have no good place to do so.

So we started English Night

We host a monthly online meetup called “English Night”, where software engineers give us the lighting talks in English and can communicate with each other after the talk.

It’s been held 9 times since it was first hosted in June 2020, and the next one is coming up on July 2nd, 2021.

Examples of Lighting Talks performed at English Night

  • Wireless Debugging on Flutter Apps Development
  • How to do effective pair programming with junior engineers
  • Having fun with three.js
  • Static code analysis into our project
  • and more!

Just like the lighting talk sessions you’ve ever seen at tech conferences or events, the speaker can choose their own topic to speak, from coding to working tips and more.

Purpose

There are two main purposes why we started English Night.

The first one is to create opportunities for engineers living in Japan to output something they want to share beyond the borders.

The second is to make it easier for engineers outside Japan to access information that was only accessible by the Japanese language, and to have a chance to communicate with Japanese people.
